Code of Ethics

CODE OF ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

The Institute and its members recognize that public park resources support intrinsic life values. The public right to enjoy and benefit from such amenities is held to be a basic quality of life component, available to all. Therefore, with the highest degree of professionalism and competence, members strive for excellence in stewardship. A broad and creative public park program provides educational, social and health-related benefits, while also establishing an improved relationship between man and the environment. Members accept that implicit in public responsibility is public trust, and commit to principles of conduct, which will establish quality leisure-time opportunities. All stewardship activities will be carried out democratically, free from conflict of interest, and with highest regard for irreplaceable natural and cultural resources, while balancing the greatest good for the greatest number over the long term, as this legacy is passed to future generations.

Truth and Integrity

All member communications, of any means and to any recipient, shall be factual and truthful in every case and as complete and current, as circumstances require. Credit shall be given where credit is due. Effective and efficient techniques, products, etc. should be supported.

Resources

At the heart of park missions, physical resources include prominent natural features, less obvious components of the parental eco-system and an array of man-made support improvements, including cultural and historical aspects. These resources in particular shall be viewed with the highest respect and balanced with use to conserve and/or preserve those assets for all time.

Publics

The large and increasing number of publics, which influence, and are influenced by, member activities, is recognized. Members will actively seek to know, accommodate and partner with these bodies, guided by applicable precedent, laws, rules, and regulations. Communication with such patron bodies will involve them in the decision making process and provide on-going information.

Education

Education is a very fundamental and continuing commitment within Institute activities.  And to the greatest extent possible, member activities at all levels should ever strive to increase knowledge in primary disciplines, as well as associated disciplines and skills. Similarly, an array of educational opportunities should be made available to the various publics.

Individuals

The authority, personal rights and opinions of every individual shall be recognized.  Each will be treated with respect and dignity and with sensitivity and compassion toward special needs. Creativity and initiative are to be encouraged. Confidentiality, when necessary, shall be respected. All decisions affecting individuals will be made in a democratic way. Friendship is an end product and not a means.

Research and Technology

Stewardship activities shall seek and embrace new knowledge. Research and experimentation should be facilitated to the over-all improvement of the profession.  Improved techniques and products should be pursued. Results and evaluations should be shared with others.
